Eastern Gateway Community College Seeking Fall Semester Tuition Waiver for Residents of Jefferson, Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull Counties

The EGCC Gateway Guarantee will save students 68% of the costs of attending the community college

Steubenville and Youngstown, Ohio – Eastern Gateway Community College today announced it will waive the per-credit-hour tuition for the Fall Semester, with the exception of a $1 fee required by the state law for students living outside of Jefferson County in the Eastern Gateway Community College service district.

The college has requested a tuition waiver from the chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education, and that request is currently pending.

“Community colleges have an obligation to be responsive to opportunities we see around us,” said Eastern Gateway Community College President Michael Geoghegan. “Right now, the communities we serve continue to struggle economically, with lower educational attainment rates below that of the state, and are facing yet more hardships from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The EGCC Gateway Guarantee will help people be more competitive in the job market and make our local economy more resilient in the long term.”

Students will still be required to pay the costs of applicable fees and books. The tuition waiver, however, will reduce students’ costs by 68 percent. The maximum waiver will be $3,200 per student per academic year for a projected 2,500 students over the biennium.

Eastern Gateway Community College was able to use federal CARES Act resources to offer free college courses during its Summer Semester. The EGCC Summer Guarantee proved there was great demand for free college opportunities in the service district, with enrollment increasing by 44 percent at the Youngstown Campus and 32 percent at the Steubenville Campus, over 2019 Summer Semester enrollment levels.

To be eligible for the EGCC Gateway Guarantee, students in the service district must have completed a 2020-2021 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submitted an EGCC online application available here. Fall courses begin August 17, 2020.
