College Mace.
The origination of the mace dates back to medieval times when it was used as a
weapon. Medieval European bishops forbidden the use of the sword were allowed
to enter battle with a mace, often an iron or steel club designed to split armor. By
the 16th century, the mace, a symbol of authority, was embraced as a ceremonial
object by colleges and universities. Traditionally, the mace is carried as part of
formal academic occasions by the Grand Marshal.
The mace of Eastern Gateway Community College was designed by Nelson Fine
Arts & Gifts in Steubenville, Ohio. The mace is fifty-three inches long and sculpted
from walnut. The colors at the base of the mace are red and gold representing
the colors of Jefferson Technical Institute and Jefferson Community College. The
upper portion of the mace features the colleges official seal and colors, which
represent the five core values
